Gerichte mit Geschichte
Ever heard of Spaghetti Ice Cream? No, it is not ice cream made out of spaghetti. Spaghettieis, or spaghetti ice cream, is a German ice cream dish made to resemble a plate of spaghetti. In the dish, vanilla ice cream is extruded through a potato ricer, giving it the appearance of spaghetti. It is then topped with strawberry sauce (to simulate tomato sauce) and white chocolate shavings to represent the parmesan cheese. Spaghettieis was created by Dario Fontanella in the late 1960s in Mannheim, Germany. Fontanella recalls serving his innovative creation to children who broke into tears because they wanted ice cream and not a plate of spaghetti. Today, it is a staple on most German ice cream parlour menus, but remains relatively unknown internationally.
Another dish with an interesting name is Himmel und Erde (heaven/sky and earth). It is a traditional dish most popular in the regions of the Rhineland, Westphalia, and Lower Saxony. It consists of black pudding, fried onions, and mashed potato with apple sauce. It has been known since the 18th century. The name of the dish originates from the name of two of the main ingredients, apples and potatoes. A German dialect word for potato is Erdapfel (English: earth/ground apple), so there are two kinds of "apples" in the dish: the apples coming from the trees, i.e. from up in the sky, and the potatoes coming from the ground.
